Old Red Truck Christmas Wreath Step by Step

Image
An old red truck underpainting in cadmium red against a black canvas. Added in some grills and two headlights. Highlights for headlights and bumper. Added in a wreath and some branches. Added in some coral highlights for the truck and also for the wreath. Added in some white highlights even. Added in some snow using a household sponge plus some ultramarine snow shadows. Blocking in some red Christmas balls and bulbs or lights. I guess I'm done with the snow and with the lights. There's still a month to go before Christmas but Merry Christmas!

Zach and GF Step by Step

Image
My watercolor portrait of Zachary Reyes-Morgan and his girlfriend apparently. Added some greenish BG and the hands and arms. Finished the painting!

Praying Mantis Step by Step

Image
A deep, dark purple background A white chalk outline of the yellow flower. This is going to be epic.  Painted the flower yellow... Then orange, yellow and white for some highlights A second or third layer of yellows, oranges and white Added in the stamen and some shadows in burnt sienna. My Praying Mantis is done! Amen? Amen.

Intro to Procreate :: Learning to Draw on the iPad

Image
I just have to add this very useful tutorial video to my blog right away. It saved me a ton of questions not to mention money, opting to learn what art tools I already have (an iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil and the very powerful  Procreate app ) and not buy another Wacom MobileStudio Pro Tablet  conspicuously on sale now. My iPad Pro 10.5" was bought in April 2018 and is a 2017 model. This video was first published in  2 Jan 2019.  Other useful links: http://www.idontknowwhattodraw.com http://www.bardotbrush.com

Queen's Gambit Step by Step

Image
A quick chalk outline of Beth Harmon, chess prodigy on the chessboard, but without the chess pieces. I'm trying to measure and layout the elements on the canvas. Outlined the figure with Sennelier Mars black and some leftover orange paint for the face. Outlined the board and blocked in the flesh with some leftover yellow paint I didn’t want to dry up. I can’t wait to continue with this experimental painting tomorrow morning. I keep visualising it in my mind. I’m happy with the way my “experimental” portraiture is coming along. Added in the first chess piece, the queen for scale and checkered in the board mint green for white. Made the background ultramarine & prussian blues and titanium white. Also made the dress a dark violet with white highlights. Finally blocked in the chess pieces, the real stars of the show. Da-da-da-done! My Queen's Gambit and my lucky charm done in the  Expressionistic style of Russian painter Alexej Jawlensky . I hope to do more of his style of pain

Lucky 9 Step by Step

Image
Ground of Ultramarine, Primary, Prussian Blues with Deep Violet and Titanium White painted quickly in a sweeping motion. Blocked in some 9 lucky pups with titanium white Added 4 floating plants in thick impasto-like fashion. Yummy! Colored in the fishies and added some more plants but something seems to be lacking...surface water perhaps? Water ripples and a few bubbles make this Lucky 9 Kois done. Hooray! Thickened the ripples.
